ACS 2002 Conference Art Show

Nine artists presented at our conference art show; all very different and unique. They ranged from glass artists, illustrators, and photographers to Native American artists. It made for an attractive and colorful marketplace.

Peter Fromm, well known for his two-volume series Whale Tales, displayed his many wonderful photo prints. not only marine mammals, but also other subjects such as birds, and even a moose, were depicted.

Katrina Kruse is an underwater photographer from Duvall, WA. Her beautiful and mesmerizing photos popped out of her stand. Most of her macro images were taken in Puget Sound, giving us an idea of what lies beneath this dark body of water... a ferry boat ride will never be the same again, knowing what's below.

Odin Lonning, well known in the Puget Sound chapter, is one of those multi-talented people. At the art show he exhibited his gorgeous Tlingit artwork and donated one of his pieces to the silent auction. Both in full regalia, he and Ann Stateler also performed the Keet Shu-Ka, an indigenous tribute to the killer whale. Odin also designed the conference logo.

Patricia Weyer, an artist working in Seattle, works with glass as well as bronze and print. She displayed some of her most stunning glass vessels depicting marine life, and graciously donated one of those works of art for our raffle.

Barbara Todd, while not so familiar here, is well known in her native New Zealand as an author, photographer, and marine mammal researcher. She was able to show her photos and sell some of her wonderful books.

Micah McCarty, a Makah artist working mainly with etched glass, was also invited as a speaker. McCarty is a descendant of a whaling family. His presence may have seemed controversial, but we felt that we could not ignore that part of history.

Craig Wickham, well known from previous conferences, is an accomplished jewelry maker. His beautiful creations are mostly designs with ocean life themes. Craig was very generous in supporting ACS by donating one of his works to the raffle.

Kate Spencer's beautiful natural history illustrations show her intimate knowledge of her subjects and her love for detail.

Pieter Folkens is internationally known as the illustrator of marine mammals. His accurate portraits of all 120 marine mammal species, have been published in countless works all over the world.
